The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has placed 92 local authorities under investigation to fish out corrupt officials.

This was revealed by the ZACC chairperson Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo when she addressed the media on Wednesday.

The occasion was part of ZACC’s programme to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day.

“The Commission is assessing systems of 92 local authorities to plug loopholes for corruption and fraud, particularly in procurement,” she said.

A recent investigation by The Zimbabwe Independent, working in collaboration with Information for Development Trust (IDT), revealed that top ranking Harare municipality officials and councillors connived to irregularly award tenders worth almost US$1 billion to four Chinese companies.

The tenders that have since been frozen were meant to upgrade the capital city’s water and sewerage systems.

Government has promised to prosecute the culprits.

Gweru town clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza, was this week fired by the city fathers after a tribunal found her guilty of a slew of corruption charges some of which involved irregular procurements.

Matanda-Moyo said there was need to strengthen local authority systems to stem corruption.

“The commission has already started working with these local authorities to establish integrity committees and ensure that their systems and procedures are water-tight,” she said.
