Almost every large city in the world has an efficient public transport system which has even those who own cars, leaving their vehicles at home and opting for public transport. This has an impact on the number of cars on the roads leading to reduced congestion. Driving to and from the central business district in Harare turns into a nightmare as with the increased number of cars, narrow bad roads, and an inefficient public transport system congestion is inevitable.
Harare’s road network has not had much work done since 1970, thus presenting a number of problems.
Information for Development trust (IDT) spoke to the Passenger’s Association of Zimbabwe, some Harare motorists and residents as well as the Harare City Council, and this is what they had to say.
