Campaign season: The rules only apply on the opposition

Two Sundays ago, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) held its maiden rally at the Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfields.

The turnout, as many had forecast, was huge.

But—apparently to kill the optic of numbers—the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had ordered the party, in the run-up to the rally, not to bus supporters in from areas other Highfields, southwest of Harare.

And the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company, a state-owned entity enjoying monopoly in public transportation that Zanu PF always relies on, barred CCC supporters from boarding its coaches on the day CCC had its rally in Highfields.

A week earlier in Epworth, no such order was given to the ruling Zanu PF.

And, two weeks after, in Kwekwe, no such order was given to Zanu PF, which commandeered hundreds of buses from literally all over the country to bring people to attend a ruling party outreach rally ahead of the by-elections taking place on 26 March.

Leaked communication from organisers of the Zanu PF rally in Kwekwe shows how the bussing was plotted, detailing pick-up points nationwide.

“Advise the drivers (of the buses) to get the waybills (weigh bills) signed,” directed the communique.

There were numerous areas where people would be picked up within the Midlands province where President Emmerson Mnangagwa is considered the godfather.

But the itinerary stretched well beyond the province, where Kwekwe is also located.

Scores of buses were arranged to ferry people from as far as Binga, Lupane, Hwange and Victoria Falls in Matabeleland North.

In

The buses came from far and wide

Matabeleland South, prospective rally congregants were directed to gather in such areas like Beitbridge.

There were several pick-up points in Masvingo, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East provinces too.

Below is the undated communique
