On 16 February, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) published that the voter registration blitz has so far registered 25 603 registrants across the country, and as of 22 February the number has since risen to 49 363. Although this is an increase in the right direction more needs to be done and one way to fix that would be through decentralisation of voter registration centers so as to increase the uptake of voter registration in Zimbabwe.
Despite ZEC publishing, the voter registration itinerary on its website not so many Zimbabweans are aware that the information is available online. Voter education goes beyond the technocrats but also first-time voters and those who cannot access the itinerary online need all the information they can get.
Some are of the notion that registering to vote is a mere waste of time as results will come out the same. They claim that whether they register and vote, the results will always be the same and one party will always win.
Could voter registration lead to more young people exercising their right to vote? Will Zimbabweans sing a similar story as the Zambians did in the August 2021 elections?
Grazers news spoke to Zimbabwean youth asking them if they are registered to vote and if they will exercise their rights to vote and this is what they said.
